“Escape
Room” also feels pretty schematic since very few plots twists serve to develop
the film’s cipher-like characters. Six thrill-seekers pile into the waiting
room of a non-descript Chicago office building. A woman’s voice tells them to
wait to be seen. They follow her instructions and exchange introductory
pleasantries. But then the suite’s door handle breaks, their disembodied host’s
voice disappears (surprise: she was a recording!), and a powerful convection
oven-style heater turns on. The film’s deadly games begin.
Zoey, Michael, Danny, Amanda, Jason, and Ben could be
seen as lucky by some. They share a rare trait that some may find enviable and
yet said trait is part of the reason they end up in a series of escape rooms.
So, depending on how you look at it, maybe they aren’t as lucky as they seem?
Yet, with the possibility to win money if they are one of the rare, if not
first, to escape this room designed by a company named Minos, maybe lucky still
is the right adjective?
On
paper, one wouldn’t think this would be a film that I would enjoy, but for
whatever reason, I had a ton of fun watching this. ESCAPE
ROOM centers around six friends who go to an escape room
to celebrate the birthday of their friend Tyler (Williams). From the beginning
of the film, it’s apparent that not everything is all rainbows and sunshine
between the friends - and infidelity may be the root of all of their problems.
However, not wanting to ruin the birthday boy’s day, the friends decide to do a
secretive, albeit somewhat fancy, escape room. This game, which bears little
information about where it came from, is much more sinister and cruel than any
of these friends could have imagined.
At the Escape Room, the friends are blindfolded, led into an
industrial warehouse somewhere on the city’s outskirts, and quickly separated.
Birthday boy Tyler soon discovers that he is trapped inside a brick room that is
a mess of old TVs, computer monitors, and newspapers. Somewhere in the same
complex, Tabby and Conrad find themselves locked in a metal room with Conrad
the unfortunate victim of a rather bizarre male chastity belt complete with
padlock. For their part, Natasha and Anderson are shackled together inside what
appears to be an oddities parlor, complete with leather sofa and taxidermied
bear head. As the individuals within each room work to solve the puzzle of how
to open their particular door, the group are slowly brought back together –
minus one.
Sure, it's less fun than the "Saw" movies, but why
doesn’t “Escape Room” work on its own terms? The characters all have dark
secrets that ostensibly give meaning to their Sisyphean struggles. But their
secrets aren’t dark enough, nor are their Rube-Goldbergian trials wild enough
to be memorable. (The second-to-last puzzle room, which looks like a condemned
hospital ward, is especially tedious). “Escape Room” may be a welcome oasis at
the start of January’s seemingly vast pre-Oscars wasteland. But if you miss
“Escape Room” while it’s in theatres, you can probably miss it altogether.
Well, you may think that until they begin to traverse
through the 6 some odd rooms. For despite their collective expertise, they
barely make it through room to room alive and together. Leaving you to wonder
if the supposed game master had planned to teach these people a lesson, like
the appreciate life more. If not the game master is your run of the mill
psychopath who wanted to exploit these people for entertainment.
Overall, Escape
Room is a solid entry into the Thriller/Horror genre with a
sequel almost guaranteed to follow. It is not as brilliant as that other film,
ahem, where you play a game with other’s lives, but in this twist where you
author your own fate, there is enjoyment in being along for the ride. It is
elementary, my dear reader, that you pay attention to even the slightest
details and try to solve the riddles along with the gang. You do not want to
find yourself trapped inside a cage of your own making! For the appreciation of
a good conundrum and a thrill for the craft of solving riddles,
CrypticRock give Escape Room 4 of 5 stars.
Sarcasm is a language used quite often in this film, and
it leads to a lot of comical moments in the early parts of the film. In fact,
it might be one of the few things which helps you get into Ben and Jason’s
characters. For while they have a sob story like everyone else, they aren’t
likable as the others are. Yet, with every joke Jason has on Danny, and Ben
throwing in a jab or two, they grow on you. Not to the point, if you could
vote, you’d sacrifice the others for them, but you don’t necessarily want
something bad to happen to them.
Speaking
of body counts, there were some distinct kills in ESCAPE
ROOM. Now, we must make mention of the fact that this film runs
parallel to movies like SAW which
really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Unlike the victims of Jigsaw’s
deadly games, these players weren’t picked because of some shameful and
destructive secret that they carry, instead our band of six players willingly
go to experience the escape room. As their game moves along, we learn that
there are some secrets that some of the players have kept close to their chest
but nothing compared to those that are in the SAWfilms. When
the inevitable happens and people start to die, I found myself relatively
impressed with the uniqueness of the traps and how they were creatively used to
go along with the escape room element.
Jeannie
likes to joke that she is little, yellow, blue, and different. She
seemingly popped out of her mother's womb with a pen in her hand and has been
writing ever since. Many moons ago - in what feels like a separate
lifetime - Jean was co-editor of an online music magazine that afforded her
great opportunities to interview and photograph some of her favorite
bands/musicians: Tommy Lee, Good Charlotte, Warrant, Bring Me The Horizon, My
Chemical Romance, Sevendust, New Found Glory, Deftones, Poison, VH-1 "Band
On the Run" Flickerstick, an endless list of unsigned locals, and so many
others. These days, she can usually be found hiking aimlessly through the
woods in her favorite Technicolor sneakers with a Nikon in hand and her rescue
dog, Molly, who is a bit hare-brained.
