Though
he had been in a band called The Hectics while in primary school, his first
performance in front of a paying audience was on August 23, 1969 as a vocalist
for the band Ibex, who had been looking for a singer. Freddie sung Elvis
Presley's "Jailhouse Rock". Future Queen band members Brian May and
Roger Taylor were then part of a band named Smile. They knew Freddie and
traveled to Liverpool to see him perform with Ibex, even joining Ibex on stage.
This marked the first steps toward the birth of Queen. Freddie convinced the
other members in Ibex to change the band name to Wreckage. Not long after, the
band began to fall apart due to outside obligations by the members, including
college, day jobs, and the drummer relocating to America. -Bio Channel
One of the most
important relationships in Mercury’s life was with Mary Austin (played by Lucy
Boynton), whom he met before he rose to fame. In real life, Mercury and Austin
lived together and were romantically involved — and at one point even engaged
to be married — for several years in the 1970s. While their romance came to an
end after Mercury began sleeping with men, the two maintained an incredibly
close friendship throughout the remainder of Mercury’s life.

Many actors were in talks to portray the enigmatic Mercury, but
the role ultimately went to Rami Malek. The American actor, known for his work
on the USA Network series Mr. Robot, is a lifelong Queen fan.
“The greatest honor I think from playing someone like Freddie Mercury is
getting the acceptance of the legendary bandmates,” Malek said in an interview
onJimmy Kimmel Live! Malek, however, does not sing in the film.
Tracks of Mercury’s voice, and singing from an impersonator, are mixed together
to create the music of Bohemian Rhapsody.
In answering the question, "How accurate is Bohemian Rhapsody?" we learned
that Mercury actually met his future bandmates in less spontaneous fashion at
the time he was attending Ealing Art College in London. While there, he
befriended Tim Staffell, who was then part of the band Smile with guitarist
Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor. May had been attending Imperial College in
London at the time and had been working on his PhD in astrophysics. Taylor was
indeed studying to become a dentist. Mercury became a fan of the band Smile and
got to know May and Taylor. Brian May recalls Mercury hassling them to let him
become a member, but they resisted until Tim Staffell left the band in 1970.
Fact-checking Bohemian Rhapsody confirms that
Freddie Mercury was known for having an eye for detail and being a
perfectionist. By May 1970, his desire to create the perfect band had
contributed to the demise of the first two groups he was in. It was around this
time that Brian May and Roger Taylor's band Smile had lost member Tim Staffell,
who left to join the band Humpy Bong. Freddie came on board and persuaded the
remaining members to change the band's name to Queen. They did recruit John
Deacon to play bass, but not until 1971. He wasn't the band's original bassist
like in the movie, nor did he play at the first Queen concert in 1970. He was
actually the fourth bassist they tried.
Far
from being that shy youth onscreen, Freddie was always "supremely
confident," according to Brian May. According to several
sources, it seems that the young Freddie Mercury always believed that he was
always going to be a star. Indeed, he’d already been part of a group called
Ibex, prior to his partnering with Queen. Plus, he was not unknown to the band
at that point; Freddie shared a flat with May, Taylor and Staffell for a time,
and they even joined Freddie and Ibex for their encore in Liverpool, in 1969.
As such, Freddie’s replacing of Staffell was not as spontaneous at the movie
suggests.
That
first Smile gig is a somewhat fateful evening for Freddie Mercury in Bohemian
Rhapsody. Prior to joining the band that will become Queen, young
Freddie also bumps into a young Mary Austin (Lucy Boynton) with whom he
immediately connects with. Soon after Freddie visits her in Biba, the shop
where she works, and their connection evolves from there.
The
pair quickly began dating. Bohemian Rhapsody steers
close to this origin story, with Lucy Boynton playing
Austin. In 1973, Mercury proposed. “He gave me a big box on Christmas Day.
Inside was another box, then another and so it went on. It was like one of his
playful games,” she recalled. “Eventually, I found a lovely jade ring inside
the last small box. . . . I was shocked. It just so wasn’t what I was
expecting. I just whispered, ‘Yes. I will.’”
Freddie Mercury was the lead singer,
pianist and primary songwriter of Queen. After immigrating to England with his
family in 1964 at the age of 17, Mercury completed his secondary schooling and
worked a series of odd jobs while playing in local bands. Soon after, the
singer joined forces with guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, and the
band, along with bassist John Deacon, recorded their debut album in 1973.
Mercury, often hailed as one of the
greatest singers and songwriters of all time, penned many of Queen’s most
notable hits, including “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions” and “Crazy
Little Thing Called Love.” The artist also embarked on a solo career, which
spawned two albums. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 45, due to
complications of AIDS.
Following
a glimpse at Queen’s Live Aid glory, Bohemian Rhapsody flashes
back to Freddie Mercury’s days as a college student and baggage handler at
Heathrow Airport. Soon after, the young and shy Farrokh Bulsara heads out to
watch the band Smile perform. When bassist Tim Staffell quits at the end of the
show, Bulsara plucks up the courage and meets with guitarist Brian May and
drummer Roger Taylor. He soon impresses them with his talent, and Freddie is
readily accepted as their new lead vocalist.
Aside
from Freddie’s witty barbs – and some sarcastic interplay between the band – Bohemian
Rhapsody takes its subjects rather seriously. Starring Rami
Malek as Freddie Mercury and Gwilym Lee as Brian May, the movie shows Queen
crafting their iconic hits and their eventual triumph at 1985’s Live Aid
concert. Yet Queen aficionados are sure to notice that timelines have been
tampered with and that occasionally some details don’t add up.
