In
the realm of The Further (the extradimensional world established in the
previous movies), meanwhile, KeyFace imprisons his female victims in cages,
sometimes even chaining them by the neck and leading them along like dogs.
These metaphorical parallels to real-life female subjugation and exploitation
are queasy and disturbing, making it all the more crowd-pleasing when Elise
(ably assisted by the righteous spirit of her deceased mother) does battle with
the slimy demon in the third act and wins.
The parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier has nightmares with her childhood in New Mexico, where she lived with her brother Christian, her supportive mother Audrey and her father Gerald, who frequently beats her when she claims that she sees ghosts everywhere in the house. When the client Ted Garza calls Elise to ask for help since he is haunted since he moved to a house in New Mexico, Elise refuses the request since the address is the same house where she spent her childhood. However she changes her mind and accepts the job, and travels with her assistants Specs and Tucker to New Mexico where they will discover an evil entity in the house.

Insidious: Chapter 2 was a direct sequel to the original, but also
introduced time travel elements that led to characters from the present
interacting directly with their past selves. While this allowed for some
intriguing revelations about the Lambert family's connection to The Further, it

driving force behind Insidious: The Last Key, out now in theaters. Though this is the fourth movie
in the popular horror franchise, it functions as a prequel, giving our psychic
heroine, Elise Rainier, the backstory she deserves. As far as seat-gripping
horror, some viewers might leave feeling underwhelmed, but the movie makes up
for its shortcomings with intriguing world-building and a new character who
could have lasting impact.

When
Byrne and Wilson departed the franchise in Chapter 3(actually a prequel), Shaye was pushed to the
forefront and became the connective tissue of the series, providing a rare
genre showcase for a woman over the age of 65. The creators’ willingness to make
a “woman of a certain age” the centerpiece of a horror/action movie is
laudable, and Elise’s embracing by the series’ younger fans is proof positive
that millennials don’t care how old their hero is (as long as she’s a badass).
While on its face (and often in practice) the franchise is nothing more or less
than pure popcorn entertainment, given the deeply entrenched sexism and ageism
of the film industry, there’s something quietly progressive about the
filmmakers’ willingness to give Shaye such a sizable platform.
Elise surmises that Adam Garza and her father before him were both possessed by the demon that terrorized her in her youth. Given the opportunity to exact revenge upon her father in The Further by punishing him with the same stick that caused her so much pain while growing up, she ultimately relents and realizes that her father and Mr. Garza were simply feeding the demon the hate and hurt it needed to thrive. Although it's not clear that all of her father's bad behaviors were attributable to the demonic force, he apologizes to her in ghost form before withering back into his spiritual cell.
